Best Kept Village Competition 2005
Judges’ Comments – Alton
I give below the judges’ comments on the village made during this year’s competition. Action taken on any adverse comments will be taken into account next year, when I hope we can welcome you into the competition again. Comments are numbered as on the marks sheet:
1a) A good number of BKV posters. Judges would have liked to have seen some at the entrance to the village.
1b) Children’s posters were creative, plentiful and in good locations.
1c) Notice boards needed some attention, particularly the main village board and at St Peter’s Church.
1d) Local information was good, but a lot of fly-posters on trees etc were noted.
2a) A few recycling awareness signs were seen and a recycling site at the village hall.
2b) Plenty of dog fouling awareness notices.
3) Generally, the churchyard was tidy, but was spoilt by the churchyard extension, which had very messy entrance steps.
4) Some litter and weeds were present around communal buildings and the village hall windows are in need of attention.
5) The surrounds around amenities were generally of a high standard, some graffiti and litter was noted at the bus stop.
6) Well organised war memorial with planters and wreath stands.
7a) Public open spaces generally created a good impression.
7b) Most private gardens were well cared for.
7c) General cleanliness was good with isolated pieces of litter noted.
8a) Children’s play equipment was disappointing, with swings missing and some maintenance required.
8b) Safety surface was forest bark, but needed topping up and weeds removing.
9) A good attempt at the map, but it had been through a poor quality photocopier and was missing some text.
FURTHER COMMENTS
A large and active village with evidence of community effort. A good impression was formed, a general feeling of public co-operation. Very little litter considering the steady stream of Alton Towers traffic.
