Introducing our Photo Gallery

If you have not visited our Photo Gallery before, please read the rest of this page. Otherwise:-

There are hundreds of digital cameras in Alton and everyone must have their favourite pictures of the village, its events, scenery and buildings. Our aim is to create a gallery of such pictures and we hope that you will be willing to take the time to upload some of your best shots so that others can enjoy them. We also have some expert photographers in the village, and it would be good if their work could be admired in the Village and beyond.

Remember, this web-site has a substantial number of visitors. Many of them visit the site from outside Alton - from all over the world. If we can showcase the stunning scenery and atmosphere of our fantastic village then people will realise that Alton is not just a place where the UK's No 1 theme park happens to be, but a place to visit in its own right.

When you click on the link above and go to our Photogallery you will see a number of thumbnail pictures. Each represents a different gallery of photos. Double click on any thumbnail to open up that particular gallery. If you again double click on the first thumbnail, it will open up a larger picture of that thumbnail and allow you to view all the pictures in that gallery at that larger size. To access a slideshow of the pictures, click on the 3rd icon from the left (it looks like an open book and is just above the main pictures) - and the slides will be shown to you 3 seconds at a time. Alternately, you can click on each picture in turn on the film strip below the larger picture.

At the moment we only have pictures that have already featured on the web site. But we want more. This is where you come in:-

First you must register: Click on Register. The first screen asks you to agree to the basic rules that govern this and any public photo gallery. Then you have to fill in some details and choose a password to enable you to return to the site in future. You will then be sent an email with a link to activate your user name and password which will enable you to Login. Click on Login - fill in your username and password and you’re in!

Some points to remember before you upload a picture:-
  • 1) The size of the file/picture must not be more than 1000KB.
  • 2) The picture must not be larger than 2000 pixels (width or height).

Many digital cameras today take very good pictures. The problem is that they are very big files and take a long time to email to someone or to 'upload'. So there are some restrictions of the size of picture you can upload to the gallery. Oh dear is it complicated then? Well don't give up yet! Just find the picture you want to upload on your computer and then let your mouse pointer rest on the name for a couple of seconds. A little box should magically appear which will tell you all you need to know - including Dimensions: something like 1600x1200 and Size: something like 533KB. If it is less than Dimensions:2000x2000 and Size: 1000KB you can then upload your masterpiece for the whole world to see:-

Click on Upload file - words which have magically appeared since you became a registered user. A new screen will appear and now you can click on Browse. This will open up a box that will enable you to find the photo on your computer. Double click on the photo and it should appear in the space next to ‘Browse’. The first time you do this just upload one file. Go to the bottom of the page and click on Continue It takes a few seconds for the upload to happen but hopefully you will see the next screen that says 1 uploads were successful. Please click 'Continue' to add the files to albums. When you do this you will see a thumbnail of your picture and a box saying Select Album You can then choose where you think it should go.

Remember that the administrator of the Village Web Site has first to approve all pictures before they appear on the gallery and can also refuse or subsequently delete pictures if they are not suitable, or move them to another album. By submitting a picture you are agreeing to its use on the Village web site.

If your picture proves to be too big to upload it will be necessary to reduce it. Use the programme that came with your camera or your computer to do this - open the picture in the programme and click on Image and then adjust size. Reduce it to say 600x600 pixels, export it under another name, and then try again with the smaller picture.

If you feel all this is beyond you then just ask your children or grandchildren to do it for you. They will do it in their sleep. However it might be a good idea to watch them just in case they treat the Gallery Administrator to some family surprises or even secrets!

There are hundreds of fantastic photos out there and you must have taken some of them. Don't keep them to yourself! Let others enjoy them too.
